Adaptive Reuse of Protected Structures ‘Retrofitting Project of the Year’ at the Irish Building and Design Awards 2016

The project involved phase one of the Grangegorman masterplan providing new academic functions for existing building stock while respecting the protected status of same.

The project provided for extending and the adaptive reuse of a total of seven buildings within the campus buildings including one church, all of which were protected structures. This project formed phase 1 for the new inner city campus development and provided for the first students to enter Grangegorman – a critical statement of intent and progress for this campus.

Contemporary elements comprising new modern materials such as glass, steel, and insitu concrete sit beside and in contrast to the existing stone walls, oak floorboards and riveted steel beams of the original buildings providing a mix of new aesthetic and materiality.
