Highly Commended Health Building, 2017
The delivery of the Primary Care Centre as part of the New University at Grangegorman is an important symbolic step in the creation of the New 3rd level Campus for TU Dublin. The project was a joint venture between Grangegorman Development Agency and the HSE and provides a variety of function to the local area including focused therapy, clinical spaces, mental health care and GP accommodation. The project involved the conservation and extension to what was a former Psychiatric Laundry building.
The original building was adapted and repurposed and new accommodation was then inserted as freestanding glazed objects into this original volume.
A new grass roofed single storey element links between the old and new with a natural palette of materials internally including exposed concrete and brickwork. Subtle changes in brick patterning and small projections in the brickwork provide textured layering to the elevation.
The new building is conceived as a series of solid brick panels and voids on horizontal banded lines with the architectural objective of providing an ambiguous / abstract ‘scale’ to the project which allows the building to stand with larger future planning blocks in the overall Grangegorman Masterplan.
