‘Conservation Project of the Year’ at the Irish Construction awards in 2016
Mayo Medical Academy acts as a teaching facility for University of Galway medical students working between Mayo University Hospital and the Nursing College in ATU Galway. The project involved the adaptive reuse of St. Mary’s Church, a protected structure, and provides flexible open plan teaching suitable for a third level facility whilst preserving the character and nature of the original building.
A new steel frame is inserted in the double height volume of the old church to provide for the new accommodation, whilst free standing from the existing structure in order to preserve its character and integrity.
New rooflights flood the plan, and a new double height entrance area allows light to penetrate deep into the interior of the church.
