Taylor McCarney were lead Architects in the design and development of the new Library building and Sports building at St Patricks College Drumcondra – The Library, a new 11,000 sq m. facility, is a landmark project within this part of the city. The design concept involved the relocation of the historical boundary wall which adjoined the road, and restricted both views and awareness of the college. Once removed, the building could project to announce itself to one of the primary roads networks in the city, and act as a gateway for the University campus.
The cantilevered glass box design of the Library provides a beacon of learning for the campus whilst establishing a new street edge. Historical links and tree lined avenues are incorporated to work in conjunction with the building in setting up new circulation systems for arrival to the campus and to provide a natural harmony to the earth coloured fibre cement façade of the building. Stained glass is utilised in the new entrance atrium to provide an ethereal experience, and to subtly project the reflected light to the floor to provide both a calm and welcome arrival experience.
This building has become an iconic landmark project for the university and this part of the city of Dublin.
